Police charged a Conover man Tuesday with murder in the death of his 10-week-olddaughter, whom doctors found had suffered broken ribs, knees, a broken leg and a skullfracture in her short life.
Catawba County sheriff’s deputies contend Marcus Ray Stuart repeatedly abused hisdaughter, Megan Renae Stuart, since she was born in April.Paramedics brought the child to Catawba Memorial on July 9 after Stuart said she washaving trouble breathing.
Doctors at the hospital found she had a skull fracture and a broken leg, according to areport filed by Det. J. W. Hudson.
Megan was transferred to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, where she died July 10 of head injuries.
Pathologists then found evidence that her ribs and knees also had been broken, the report said.
” Every officer who dealt with this file wanted to run home and hug their children afterreading it,” Maj. Richard “Mo” Cannon said Tuesday.
Stuart, a machine operator at the Polymask plant in Canover, was being held withoutbond Tuesday in the Catawba County Jail.
His court-appointed attorney, Ted Cummings, did not return calls for comment Tuesday.
Cannon said no charges have been filed against Megan’s mother, Amy Stuart.
Detectives charged the baby’s father because he was primarily responsible for caring for Megan during the day and was watching her when paramedics were summoned,Hudson’s report indicates.
The investigation is continuing. Cannon said it took investigators more than two weeks to charge Stuart because they were waiting for autopsy results.
Relatives of both M~rcus and Amy Stuart refused Tuesday to talk about the infant’s death.
